Macron will nominate new French prime minister in 48 hours

French President Emmanuel Macron will name a new prime minister within 48 hours, the Elysee Palace has said, fending off speculation that fresh elections could be imminent.

Earlier on Wednesday, outgoing Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said the possibility of dissolving parliament was beginning to fade following talks with political parties over the last two days.

“There is a majority in parliament and that is the majority that keen to avoid fresh elections,” he said.

On Monday, Lecornu – a close ally of Macron – became the third French PM to leave his job in less than a year, driven out by a hung parliament deeply divided along ideological lines.

He was then asked by Macron to stay on for two days to form a consensus among parties on how to get out of the current political crisis.

In a much-awaited TV interview on Wednesday evening, Lecornu said that as well as not wanting fresh elections, most MPs also recognised the pressing need to pass a budget by the end of the year.

However, Lecornu recognised the path towards forming a government was still complicated due to the divisions within parliament and to politicians eyeing the next presidential election.

Whoever ends up in government “will need to be completely disconnected from any presidential ambition for 2027,” Lecornu said.

Lecornu, a former armed forces minister, gave no indication about who the next prime minister would be, and although he said his mission was “finished” he also did not appear to rule himself out entirely.

France’s political stalemate began following snap elections in July 2024. Since then no one party has had a majority, making it difficult to pass any laws or reforms including the yearly budget.

The big challenge facing Lecornu and his two predecessors has been how to tackle France’s crippling national debt, which this year stood at €3.4tn (£2.9tn), or almost 114% of economic output (GDP), the third highest in the eurozone after Greece and Italy.

Previous prime Ministers Michel Barnier and Francois Bayrou were ousted in confidence votes after they presented austerity budgets.

Lecornu said his own draft budget would be presented next week, although it would be “open for debate”.

“But the debate needs to begin… parties cannot say they’ll vote it down without examining it,” he added.

Similarly, Lecornu said, one big issue that has been plaguing French politics since 2023 will need to be revisited – Macron’s highly contested pension reforms. “We have to find a way for the debate to take place,” Lecornu said.

But some factions in parliament appear immovable from their positions.

Mathilde Panot of the radical left France Unbowed (LFI) said soon after Lecornu’s TV interview that the only solution was “the resignation and departure of Emmanuel Macron”.

Meanwhile, far right National Rally’s leader Marine Le Pen, who has long been calling for fresh elections, stated on Wednesday that she would vote down any new government.

It is unclear, at this stage, which political forces would support a new government.

The so-called common platform of centrists and Republicans that have run the government since last year appears to have fallen apart.

The big question now is whether over the last 48 hours Lecornu was able to persuade the Socialists, who were part of that left bloc during the elections, to prop up a government in some way.

Asked about the calls by some political factions for Macron to resign, with even Macron’s own former prime minister Edouard Philippe floating the idea earlier this week, Lecornu said France needed a stable, internationally recognised figure at its helm.

“This is not the time to change the president,” Lecornu said.

However, Macron is appearing increasingly isolated, with even close allies beginning to distance themselves from him.

Earlier this week Gabriel Attal, widely seen as Macron’s protégé, said he “no longer understood” Macron and called for the appointment of an independent negotiator to steer the government.

Macron has not yet spoken publicly since Lecornu’s shock resignation on Monday morning. Lecornu promised the president would “address the French people in due course,” without specifying when that may be.

The mother of an Israeli man taken by Hamas on 7 October 2023 says she still does not know if her son is dead or alive, but has “real hope” that US President Donald Trump’s peace plan will bring the return of all the hostages held in Gaza.

Herut Nimrodi told BBC News she was “fearing the worst” for her son Tamir, a non-combat soldier, but she was clinging to hope that “he’s still hanging on” two years after his abduction.

She said he was the only Israeli hostage whose family had not been told if they were alive or dead.

The peace plan, proposed by President Trump, has been gaining momentum, with indirect talks now under way between Hamas and Israel to end the war and return the hostages.

“They have been trying to create an agreement for a while but it didn’t take off. This time it feels different,” Ms Nimrodi said. “There is real hope that this is the one, this is the last deal.”

She said it was particularly important that all hostages – living and dead – would be released in the plan’s first phase.

“This is huge, this is a blessing for us,” she said.

“It’s urgent to release the hostages – those that are still alive, and even the ones that have passed. We don’t know what state their bodies are in. We have to release them so the families have some kind of closure. Even the families that got the message that their loved ones are deceased, they don’t accept it because they need proof.”

Tamir is one of 47 hostages kidnapped on 7 October who remain in Gaza – 20 of them are believed still to be alive.

The last time she saw her son was in a video of his abduction posted on social media on 7 October 2023.

“My youngest daughter – she was 14 at the time – came screaming that she had seen her brother being abducted on Instagram,” she recalled.

“I saw Tamir wearing his pyjamas. He was barefoot. He had no glasses on. He can hardly see without them. He was terrified.”

Since seeing her son – an education officer in the Israeli military who was 18 at the time – forced into a jeep and driven away, “fading away into Gaza”, she has received no signs of life.

“He’s the only Israeli with no indication about what happened or where exactly he is,” she said.

The fate of a Nepalese hostage, Bipin Joshi, is also unknown.

Like other families the BBC has spoken to whose relatives were killed or kidnapped that day, Ms Nimrodi said life had been frozen for two years.

“People ask me: ‘It’s been two years, how are you holding on?’ And I say, ‘It doesn’t feel like two years. It feels like one long exhausting day’,” she said.

That day two years ago was the deadliest in Israel’s history, when some 1,200 people were killed by armed men from Hamas and other groups, and 251 others taken hostage, most from southern communities and a music festival.

The attacks sparked a war in which more than 67,000 people in Gaza have been killed by Israeli military action, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry. Almost the entire population has been displaced and much of its infrastructure flattened.

Ms Nimrodi said she was at her home near Tel Aviv when she received a message from Tamir early on 7 October 2023 from his post at the northern side of the Gaza border.

“He said ‘there are rockets and it’s non-stop’,” she recalled.

Tamir told her he would return soon to the family home, as he usually would during such moments because of his non-combat role.

“I told him to take good care of himself and text me whenever he can and he said he would try. Those were the last words between us. It was 06:49 in the morning, and I found out later on that 20 minutes after our last message he was taken away,” she said.

She has been lobbying for her son’s return, including at rallies with other hostage families.

But she said there were also days when she “can’t get out of bed”.

“I try to listen to my body – what can I do? How much strength do I have?”

The momentum behind the peace plan has brought some hope for the remaining hostage families that their loved ones could soon be returned home.

Ms Nimrodi joined tens of thousands of people – including the families of hostages, and former hostages themselves – who had gathered in Tel Aviv on Saturday night to call for the deal to be implemented.

She wore a T-shirt with her son’s photo on the front, smiling and bespectacled.

“I believe in this deal, and I believe that Trump will not let this slip away,” she said, as she called on Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “do the right thing – bring the hostages home and bring peace to this region”.

She said that when she tried to sleep that night, she would be met with the “terrified look” in her son’s eyes as he was abducted, which plays in her head every day.

“To hope for two years – it’s absolutely exhausting.”

Germany’s home kit for the 2026 World Cup has leaked online – and it pays tribute to one of the nation’s most beloved designs.

In images shared by Footy Headlines, adidas have gone retro with a shirt that closely mirrors the strip worn when West Germany lifted the trophy in 1990.

As tradition dictates, the jersey is predominantly white, with black adidas shoulder stripes and red-and-black cuff trims. But the standout feature is the flag-inspired motif: black, red, and yellow stripes sweep diagonally from each shoulder, meeting in the middle to form a striking V-shaped diamond pattern across the chest.

It’s an unmistakable nod to the 1990 World Cup-winning shirt, which carried a similar design – though that version placed the stripes off-centre.

Other details include the four stars above the DFB crest, each printed with the years of Germany’s triumphs – 1954, 1974, 1990, and 2014 – plus black shorts and white socks to complete the set.

A nostalgic throwback to one of football’s most iconic shirts, the design is expected to go down well with fans – who will be hoping Die Mannschaft can channel the spirit of 1990 in North America next summer.

BREAKING: Leaked US intelligence says Iran’s nuclear plans “likely only set back months” | BBC News

A leaked Pentagon intelligence report says the US strikes on Iran’s key nuclear facilities has probably only set back its enrichment programme by months.

President Trump claimed after the bombing that the US attack had “completely obliterated” Iran’s nuclear programme.

The White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called the report “flat out wrong” and said “the leaking of this alleged assessment is a clear attempt to demean President Trump, and discredit the brave fighter pilots who conducted a perfectly executed mission to obliterate Iran’s nuclear program”.

The initial classified assessment by the US Defence Intelligence Agency said two of the sites were not destroyed and concludes that key elements of the programme to enrich uranium may soon restart.

It says that much of Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium, which could possibly be used to make a nuclear weapon, was moved before the strikes took place.

The development came as a ceasefire between Israel and Iran appeared to be holding, after President Trump lashed out at Israel for its failure to abide by the terms of the truce.

Settling for an eighth-place finish among Italy’s elite last season and missing out on booking any kind of European ticket, AC Milan got a new era underway over the summer following Allegri’s arrival at the San Siro.

Despite getting the new campaign underway with a 2-1 defeat at home against Serie A newcomers Cremonese on August 23rd, Sunday’s guests have come roaring back in a sensational fashion.

Clinching a 2-1 victory against defending champions Napoli last weekend, the Rossoneri had won all of their previous five domestic appearances across all competitions ahead of Sunday’s trip to Turin.

While AC Milan might be rueing a real missed opportunity here as both Pulisic and Leao wasted golden second-half opportunities, Allegri’s camp have enjoyed a dominant start to proceedings.

Winning all of their opening three Serie A appearances by an aggregate score of 7-3 and marking their return from September’s international break with a famous 4-3 victory against Inter Milan, it appeared that Juventus were starting to be considered a genuine title contender.

However, despite flying out of the traps when opening up the new campaign, Sunday’s hosts have largely failed to find a similar level over the past few weeks.

Suffering late heartbreak away at Spanish outfit Villarreal earlier in the week as they eventually had to settle for a 2-2 draw on foreign soil, Igor Tudor’s side have now played out a stalemate in all of their previous five appearances across all competitions.

While Pulisic might have shockingly blazed his penalty over the bar just minuets after returning from the half-time break, the former Chelsea ace has quickly cemented his spot as the new poster boy at the San Siro.

With the USA international registering six direct goal contributions in as many appearances so far this season, it has been questioned where Leao would fit in this season.

Only notching eight Serie A strikes last season – his lowest domestic goal return since the 2020/21 campaign – Leao might have to accept that he will take a more backwards seat this year.

Squandering a pair of golden chances late on and missing out on the chance to leave Turin as Milan’s hero, the Portuguese international will face more backlash over the next fortnight.

Senior Venezuelan gang member captured in Colombia

The alleged leader of Venezuelan criminal gang Tren de Aragua’s armed wing has been captured in a joint operation involving Colombia, the US and the UK.

Colombia’s National Police said José Antonio Márquez Morales – known as Caracas – was arrested in the city of Valledupar and alleged that he played a central role in managing the logistics and finances for the group for extortion, drug trafficking, and smuggling.

Tren de Aragua has been targeted by US President Donald Trump who declared it a terrorist organisation and deported more than 250 people he claimed were members of the gang to a jail in El Salvador.

Colombia’s National Police Director, Carlos Fernando Triana Beltrán said Mr Márquez Morales was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice which is a request to police worldwide to detain someone pending extradition.

News of the arrest emerged amid continuing tensions between the US and Venezuela over the Trump administration’s anti-drug-trafficking efforts in Latin America.

It has deployed warships to the Caribbean and last month, bombed vessels which Trump claimed were carrying drugs, apparently travelling from Venezuela to the US.

The Trump administration has accused Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro of being in league with drug cartels and is offering a reward for information leading to his capture to $50m (£37m).

Maduro has strongly rejected Washington’s accusations and has defended his government’s actions against drug trafficking.
